Dear Friends and Colleagues,
For many, the holiday season is synonymous with joy, togetherness, and celebration. It’s a time when people of all ages and backgrounds eagerly join in festive events hosted by an array of organizations, from community non-profits to corporate entities. These gatherings, infused with a spirit of unity, are cornerstones of the season.
Yet, for others, the holidays magnify feelings of loneliness and hardship. This dual reality is particularly striking in a dynamic city like New York, where the fast pace and constant excitement can unintentionally overshadow the struggles of individuals facing hardship. Frank Sinatra’s iconic line, “I want to wake up in the city that never sleeps,” captures the energy of this bustling metropolis, yet it also hints at the hidden challenges faced by many of its residents.
As citizens and nonprofit leaders, it is our collective responsibility to “hold space” for the most vulnerable among us. During the holidays, this means offering not just material support but also the presence of compassion and understanding.
The good news is that in Brooklyn, my beloved home city, several organizations offer unwavering support and hope to those in need, not just during the holidays, but every day of the year.
Spotlight on Community Initiatives
Brooklyn Community Services (BCS)

and community stability.
Brooklyn Community Service tackles systemic poverty through a range of programs designed to support educational success, leadership development, and stability in housing and employment. With food insecurity impacting a staggering 1 in 3 Brooklyn residents, their work is more critical than ever.
BCS provides vital resources to combat hunger and guarantee families have access to nutritious food. Their initiatives empower various groups, including individuals with disabilities and seniors. With a robust volunteer program, BCS creates meaningful opportunities for Brooklyn residents and businesses to make a real difference in their community.
Brooklyn Org

For the second year in a row, it has been my privilege to serve as a member of Brooklyn Org’s Community Advisory Council. This year’s council is comprised of 12 passionate and committed Brooklyn residents, each of us bringing our unique backgrounds and professional insights to our work. Together, we play an integral role in reviewing funding applications from Brooklyn nonprofits.
A highlight of our work is visiting local organizations and helping to make sure that funding is directed where it is most needed. Brooklyn Org is dedicated to making Brooklyn a model of equity and justice.
With multiple avenues for involvement—from membership to volunteering to establishing donor-advised funds—the foundation empowers individuals to contribute to the borough’s ongoing transformation. Engaging with their programs is an opportunity to help shape a hopeful and inclusive future for Brooklyn.
Crown Heights Service Center (CHSC)

The Crown Heights Service Center, Inc. is a non-profit community-based organization dedicated to fostering growth and advancement within a supportive family-oriented environment for under-served populations.
As a Board member, I am proud of the organization’s comprehensive educational programs and activities encompassing In-School, After-School, Out-of-School, and Summer initiatives, which aim to empower individuals and families to thrive and succeed. CHSC is dedicated to providing critical resources and opportunities, especially during the holiday season, to guarantee Brooklyn’s most vulnerable residents are supported and uplifted.
Mount Sinai Brooklyn

For over fifty years, Mount Sinai Brooklyn has served as a pillar of community health. The commitment of their healthcare professionals extends beyond medical care to holistic community support. Their volunteer program is particularly inspiring, as it brings together individuals from all walks of life to create a healing and supportive environment for patients and their families.
YWCA Brooklyn

YWCA Brooklyn is a non-sectarian, grassroots organization dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. With over 130 years of service, the YWCA Brooklyn remains a vital asset to the community.
Their work advances the lives of low-income women and girls of color, offering safe havens for survivors of gender-based violence, opportunities for teens and immigrant women to enhance their lives, and a hub for advocacy and community action. They work daily to level the playing field for all Brooklynites while truly empowering women and girls.
Parting Words
These organizations represent just a handful of the many groups working tirelessly to bring light to those experiencing hardship during the holidays. Their dedication reflects the compassion and generosity that define the spirit of Brooklyn.
As we immerse ourselves in holiday festivities, let’s also turn our thoughts to those who may not have the means to celebrate. A helping hand, a listening ear, or a shared blessing can make an immeasurable difference. By uniting in compassion and action, we can ensure that the holiday season is a time of inclusivity, connection, and care for everyone.
And remember, the need for compassion and support extends far beyond the holiday season. Consider donating to a local food bank, volunteering your time, or advocating for policies that tackle the root causes of poverty and food insecurity. Together, we can build a more just and fair Brooklyn for all.
Thank you for all that you do!
Fondly,
Monique
